Activities
Yorktown believes a broad range of activities of many types enhance educatio and enhance college admission. Yorktown accelerates 1 hour of class instruction into 15 to 20 minutes and increases comprehension 15 percentage points (From 78 C+ to 93 A). Yorktown can both accelerate learning and provide more time for activities on a flexible basis.
Activities are grouped into several types:
- Project learning
Yorktown teachers will assign special projects for learning to individuals and groups. These will be tailored to the needs of the students. These projects may range from survey of ancient art or governments to genetics, satellite technology or robot building.
- Regular between lesson activities
Each student is expected to complete 2 lessons and hour and use the other 25 minutes for social time, break time, or work on other activities.
- Special learning activities
Yorktown will periodically arrange for special activities. For Example the Art Institute of Chicago has one of the world's leading impressionist art collections, and it is on loan at the Kimball museum this fall. Yorktown will arrange for students to experience this extraordinary opportunity.
- Other activities
Yorktown will make arrangements for almost any activity that parents and students desire. Yorktown provides for more time, and flexible scheduling, to pursue activities. Students can excel in special activities including sports, arts, or other activities. Yorktown's methods allow for better coaching and facilities than traditional schools can offer.
Just a few examples include:
Wrestling - Dallas Dynamite Wrestling Club coached by Olympic Gold Medalist Brandon Slay and Silver Medalist Jamil Kelly. They provide coaching for several styles of wrestling and competitive wrestling teams.
Acting - Margo Manning Casting and Acting Studio. They provide acting and modeling lessons including production casting.
Hockey and Ice Skating - Dallas Star Center. They provide hockey and ice skating and are associated with the National Hockey League Dallas Stars.
Golf - Hank Haney - Tiger Woods golf coach - has teaching facilities available for Yorktown students.
