What is Yorktown Education?
Yorktown is an affordable private school that provides individualized learning.
What kind of student attends Yorktown?
Yorktown students are nice, kind and caring and are learning to be responsible. They fall into several major categories:
• Gifted students enjoy the ability to learn a wide variety of material at an accelerated pace while relating to their multiple peer groups.
• Achieving students like athletes, actors, singers and those with other activities thrive here. They can complete their work efficiently and the flexible schedule allows them to develop their special gifts.
• Ambitious students with aspirations and the ability to achieve. They can then live out their dreams. Many of these students may be of average intelligence.
• Recovering students also do well at Yorktown. These are students who may be weak in an academic area. For instance, one bad year with a math teacher can set a student back forever. These students need to catch up from a poor educational experience before Yorktown.
What grades does Yorktown serve?
At Yorktown Education we currently serves students ages 11-18 (grades 6-12) in our upper school program. We plan to open a lower school for students 5-12 (kindergarten - sixth grade) in fall 2010 which will offer accelerated learning for younger students while providing a more traditional schedule.
How is Yorktown different?
Yorktown allows students to accelerate their learning and work at a pace that fits their individual learning style. We also provide teachers who serve as personal tutors which allows for much more one-to-one instruction than traditional schools provide.
What are the educational requirements for my student to be admitted at Yorktown?
Students admitted to Yorktown should be at grade level in most of their core coursework and be committed to advancing their skills. Yorktown is not for students with behavioral problems or students with severe disabilities or learning problems.
How big is Yorktown?
Yorktown limits individual school size to 200 students to maintain its superior learning environment, group dynamics and student-teacher relationships.
How is Yorktown different?
Yorktown recognizes that every student is an individual and customizes each student's education for his or her individual talents, needs and learning styles. This accelerates student learning, improves retention and makes school a more enjoyable experience. Yorktown schools provide a calm, comforting, and encouraging learning environment for students.
Explain your mastery based educational process.
We require students to learn 90% or above of the material (an A average). If students do not master the knowledge at this level Yorktown does not pass students on like traditional schools. Yorktown teachers review a test, see what the student missed and then re-teaches the student the necessary material. Students are then retested, pass and move on. Students start moving faster in the mastery-based system than traditional systems because their fundamentals are stronger.
How is a typical day structured at Yorktown?
Basically, work-play then work-play then work-play. The structure of the day varies depending on the learning style of the student and his individual learning rhythm. Students meet customized curriculm goals weekly. Hours are flexible with the school opens at 7am and closes at 6pm. Group work occurs between the hours of 10am-2pm. Students take regular social breaks and lunch. Each afternoon there is a physical education class or outdoor recreation time.

Yorktown teachers love kids. They learn the styles and backgrounds of each student and provide caring guidance through their academic careers. Yorktown teachers have extensive teaching experience as well as significant experience in professions outside education. All Yorktown teachers have masters degrees or significant experences in actual subject matter.
What kind of social or extracurricular activities are available for my student at Yorktown?
Yorktown believes in extra-curricular activities and social events. Flexible scheduling allows students to participate in any pursuit on their schedule outside the classroom. We also encourage recreation time during the school day and hold "FUN Fridays" every week, with a "SUPER FUN Friday" event at the end of the month.
Do Yorktown credits transfer to other schools and what about college?
Yes, Yorktown credits transfer to other schools as required by law. Yorktown targets the Advanced Placement curriculum and tests, which are the gold standard in American education. Over half of Yorktown's current students who join as six or seventh graders, are on track to complete an advanced placement class at freshman or sophomore age, which places Yorktown among the elite high schools in the United States.
What is the cost per student to attend Yorktown?
Tuition is $800.00 a month.
What is a school year?
Yorktown runs a quarter system all year round. The school year starts September 1st with the following three quarters starting December 1st, March 1st and June 1st. A student can begin at any time during the quarter.
